WebLogic Server 8.1 is BEA's market leading Web application server, an enterprise-level application server that is a highly scalable, secure application server that provides the location to deploy and manage J2EE and standalone applications both locally and remotely. WebLogic 8.1 is fully compliant with the Sun J2EE 1.3 specification providing the containers to run JavaServer Pages and servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans, J2EE connector architecture resource adapters, and much more. This chapter gives an overview of why we need application servers, what WebLogic 8.1 supports, additions and changes to WebLogic 8.1, and a brief history of WebLogic.
